- Research of art and pedagogy-

This page describes the world of research that I have experienced through Stockholm University of the Arts since 2023. I will gather all the information about my various research projects. I am also learning to cite Research Catalogue database, as I am planning on using it to further develop my practices.

How do I understand artistic research?

Artistic research is to me the kind of research that weaves artistic processes as some part of the research. For me it means that in some way, the traditional academic research process is scaffolded through artistic means. The research has to still have a discussion with the world. It has to take its responsibility and create new information.

My own background in artistic research

My background is in performing arts (physical theatre), pedagogy (drama and theatre pedagogy) and in intimacy direction. I do have a good common knowledge and also some studies within natural sciences and psychology.

I work a lot in the structures and especially within union activities and within independent performing arts organizations. Both facets of my work are about creation of more durable and fairer structures. I also agree with these politically, which has made me resonate strongly with Left Union principles: as it is still the only party in Finland that combines human rights with sustainable environmental relationship. I am strong advocate for humanity and humane actions. In the end, I would just like people to fare well independent of who they are.

I am planning on taking time to describe my own activities from different perspectives, conceptualizing and mapping them. I am currently considering where my astistic and researcher identitites situate themselves. This work is still incomplete, and needs more labour and learning about research methods. I have noticed that my identity is anyways dynamically in constant motion. I am curious in finding new forms, new tools and new solutions, and curious to get to know new people and find new humane thoughts.

Maybe the most important way for me to think about my own actions, my practice, is to define it through never working alone: I help, support and build things together; never alone; I polish ideas made by others, achieve and combine them in the best possible way. Collaboration seems to be one of they key features of my own practice.

I am also constantly investigating new ways to express my experiences. I write, describe, tell stories and discuss. I try to use clear references when they are needed and produce new information to be shared with others – to the best of my ability. It is still important to remember that this page is about artistic research, and might not change the rules on the way.

On this page, I have gathered all the artistic research projects to this site as soon as I develop them.

The Physicality of the Performing Arts Processes (working title)

The rehearsal processes are full of complex humane experiences. In this research project I seek to approach the physicality of human experiences during thee processes and investigate what all contributes to the process.

My research is currently done in the context of a degree project at the Master Programme in Performing Arts at Stockholm University of the Arts. I will be working on this program during 2023-2025.

If you feel like joining me in researching the possibilities around these topic in Stockholm, in Tampere, in Helsinki or in Turku, please be in contact.

RESEARCH PLAN

Updated 9.1.2024

See attached file for a pdf copy.

The rehearsal processes are full of complex humane experiences. In this research project I seek to approach the physicality of human experiences and investigate what all contributes to the process. My interest is in the finer details and wider contexts irrelevant to the actual process of story-crafting.

FACET ENVIRONMENTAL PHYSICALITY PHYSICAL TIMELINE PHYSICALITY OF THE EXPERIENCE
MEANING The effect of the space itself What do people do in the space? The inner experiences during the process
METHODS To be determined 360-video Thinking aloud with video

Three Steps of General Schedule

1. Spring 2024 to test out the two-dimensional framework including physical timeline and physicality of experience facets
2. Autumn 2024 to calibrate the framework first with a variety of productions starting to include environment physicality
3. Spring 2025 to formalize the results into a shareable format.

Current plan of activities for Spring-Summer 2024

– Call to Action Presentation (Zoom Presentation, similar to the test presentation on December 13th)
– Weekend #1 – Practical measuring methodology tests
– Weekend #2 – Building the thinking aloud with recording framework structures.
– Weekend #3 – Testing the co-researcher framework in a real-life rehearsal setting.
– After-the-Weekends-Meeting – Presenting the research results to co-researchers
– Public Exposition – Presenting the research results to general public

Intentional Processes in December 2023

The concept of Intentional Processes is something I am currently working on. It is a theoretical concept used to generalize the concept of intentional spaces and safer spaces into more specific kind of processes and principles.

Presenting Consent Space in December 2023

Consent Space is a visual concept I have been working on, something to define the concept in a way that would be useful in defining what all it means when we speak of consent.

Starting the School: First impressions

A Memory Lane to Analyze Physicality is about my journey while I prepare for the research project starting in 2024. It is an introspective blog about me myself and about the practicalities of the journey.

I would be honoured if you would comment or let me know of any observations that might come up.
